Joining the list of speakers at the 6th International Mars Society Convention will be MER Deputy Project Scientist Albert Haldemann:
Mars Exploration Rover(MER)mission Deputy Project Scientist Albert Haldemann will give a special plenary talk at the 6th International Mars Society Convention, which will take place at the Hilton Hotel in Eugene, Oregon, August 14-17, 2003.The MER mission's twin Mars Exploration Rovers will seek to determine the history of climate and water at two sites on Mars where conditions may have once been favorable to life. Each rover carries five scientific instruments and will navigate itself around obstacles as it drives itself across the martian surface.
The first rover, named Spirit, launched on June 10, 2003. The second rover, named Opportunity, has been rescheduled to launch no earlier than Saturday, June 28 at 11:56 p.m. Eastern time (8:56 p.m. Pacific).+ The first rover will reach Mars on Jan. 4, 2004, Universal time (evening of Jan. 3 Pacific and Eastern time)
+ The second rover will reach Mars on Jan. 25 Universal timeWith the ability to travel kilometers across the Martian surface, exploring as they go, Spirit and Opportunity promise to make the MER mission the most exciting interplanetary voyage of exploration ever conducted. Haldeman's MER briefing is only one of more than a hundred talks, papers, and panels from leading Mars exploration scientists, engineers, and others that will be presented at the Mars Society Convention, which is the world's largest annual gathering of those interested in Red Planet exploration.
Registration for the Mars Society Convention is now open at www.marssociety.org. Abstracts of no more than 300 words for talks relating to all matters concerning the exploration or settlement of Mars may be submitted by June 30, 2003 to msabstracts@aol.com. Reduced conference registration rates are available for those who register by June 30, 2003.
